The genomic history of the Aegean palatial civilizations

Summary The Cycladic, the Minoan, and the Helladic (Mycenaean) cultures define the Bronze Age (BA) of Greece. Urbanism, complex social structures, craft and agricultural specialization, and the earliest forms of writing characterize this iconic period. We sequenced six Early to Middle BA whole genomes, along with 11 mitochondrial genomes, sampled from the three BA cultures of the Aegean Sea. The Early BA (EBA) genomes are homogeneous and derive most of their ancestry from Neolithic Aegeans, contrary to earlier hypotheses that the Neolithic-EBA cultural transition was due to massive population turnover. Tutkielmassa analysoidaan Hella Wuolijoen romaania Työmiehen perhe: työmies Rantasen perheen kronikka vuosilta 1895–1945 (1970) Mihail Bahtinin lanseeraamien tien ja tapaamisen kronotooppien pohjalta. Realistista kehitysromaania edustavan Työmiehen perheen Wuolijoki kirjoitti jo vuonna 1950, mutta tuolloin kustantajat kieltäytyivät romaanin julkaisemisesta, sillä he pitivät sitä jopa propagandistisena ja porvareita halventavana tendenssiromaanina. Kronotoopilla Bahtin tarkoittaa kirjallisuudessa kuvattujen ajallisten ja paikallisten suhteiden keskinäistä sidonnaisuutta eli aikapaikallisuutta, jossa juonen solmukohdat alkavat ja selkeytyvät. The amateur astronomer Anders Hellant and the plight of his observations of the transits of Venus in Tornio, 1761 and 1769

Anders Hellant was a versatile Swedish amateur scientist whose figure dominated eighteenth century intellectual life in Tornio, his little home town of some 500 inhabitants at the mouth of the Tornio river. My study is mainly based on the biographies published in Finnish (Bostr¨om 1918) and in Swedish (Tob´e 1991) but I have also consulted some original sources in Paris and in Stockholm. Hellant incarnated almost all by himself the inquiring scientific spirit of the Age of Enlightenment in Swedish Lapland. There is much to be said about his life and works, but here I focus on his observations of the Venus passages in 1761 and 1769. peerReviewed
